Biography
Martin Charles graduated with honors in Medical School at Universidad del Salvador in 1999. After this, he accomplished the residency at Jorge Malbran Ophthalmological Foundation Argentina where he was elected as chief of residents for two consecutive years. During this, he studied the ophthalmology specialist career at Universidad del Salvador. Later he achieved the Anterior Segment and Retina and Ocular Trauma specialty with his father, Dr. Daniel E. Charles.
In 2006 he made the teaching career to become a pre and post grade Medicine Professor at Universidad del Salvador. In addition to this, he also dictates classes in Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology career at Universidad de Buenos Aires.
He is currently developing as a Vitreoretinal, trauma and anterior segment surgery specialist performing over 2000 annual surgical procedures. His areas of interest are cataract surgery, macular surgery, retinal detachment surgery, treatment of maculopathies, clinical research of new drugs for maculopathy, eye trauma surgery and diabetic retinopathy surgery. His other passions envolve helping in the development of new technologies in the surgical branch, being a consultant to the Alcon laboratory, Fort Worth, Texas, USA.
He is Co-Director with his father of Dr. Charles Ophthalmologic Center and chief of the Ophthalmological Service at Trinidad Palermo and Finochietto sanatoriums.
He has presented 241 papers, posters, videos and scientific photographs at various conferences all over the world, obtaining 40 scientific rewards for them. He has published 11 researches in specialist books and magazines being one of them a contribution in the well-known book of Ryan, Retina Fifth Edition.
Currently he has two patents in specialty devices.
He is member of various Ophthalmological societies including the American Society of Retinal Specialists, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, American Academy of Ophthalmology, Argentine Society of Ophthalmology , Panamerican Society of Ophthalmology, Argentine Council of Ophthalmology, Argentine Society of Retina and Vitreous, Panamerican Society of Ocular Trauma and also held executive positions in six of them including president of the PanamericanSociety of Ocular Trauma.
In 2012 he was elected by American Society of Retinal Specialist as representative of this society in Argentina, holding that position today.
Back in 2006 he and his father stablished the VER Foundation to bring help to lacking people and opened a residency to teach young professionals people in his institution. That year he created the residence for the training of specialist in Ophthalmology. In 2016 he opened the vacancy to train fellows in Retina specialty.
In August of 2013 he received the Honor Award of the American Society of Retina Specialist in Toronto, Canada and in the same month of 2014 the Senior Honor Award of the American Society of Retinal Specialist in Chicago, USA. In 2015 he was
elected President of the Panamerican Society of Trauma Ocular. In 2016 received the Rhett Buckler Award winner distinction during the 34th Annual Meeting of the American Society in San Francisco, California, USA.
In 2017 he received for the second time the Rehtt Buckler Award during the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Retinal Specialist in Boston MA. USA.
In 2018 and 2019 received for third and fourth time the Rhett Buckler Awards winner during the 36 and 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Retina Specialist in Vancouver, Canadá and Chicago USA.
In July of 2020 he received for the fifth consecutive time Rhett Buckler Awards winner of the American Society of Retina Specialist in Seattle USA virtually, due to the global context.
In June of 2021 he recieved the new fellow of the ASRS (FASRS) designation that recognizes members in good standing who have demostrared consistent commitment to the Society, expertise in the management of vitreoretinal disorders and the highest ethical and professional standards.
