Biography
Dr. Belin grew up in the village of Youngstown in Western New York. He graduated magna cum laude from The University at Buffalo where he went on to work as a researcher in child psychology. He then obtained a Doctor of Medicine degree from Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine in Miami, FL. It was during this time when Dr. Belin had the opportunity to participate in research at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute that he developed an interest in ophthalmology, particularly diseases of the retina. He graduated in the top of his medical school class and was elected by the faculty into the Gold Humanism Honor Society Medical for excellence in clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service.
After medical school Dr. Belin completed both his Internal Medicine Internship and Ophthalmology Residency at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine in Long Island, NY. He was awarded a research grant from the Manhattan Eye Foundation and served as Chief Resident in his final year of residency. Dr. Belin joined VRS in 2019 to complete his clinical fellowship in Vitreoretinal Disease and Surgery. During his fellowship he received the VitreoRetinal Surgery Foundation research grant as well as the Knights Templar Eye Foundation Pediatric Ophthalmology Research Fund Award for investigating hereditary pediatric retinal detachments through the American Academy of Ophthalmology IRIS® Registry.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Belin joined VRS as an associate surgeon, where he also serves as co-director of the pediatric retina service. In addition to treating adults he specializes in pediatric retinal diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity, Stickler Syndrome, Coat’s Disease, and many other conditions that affect children. He has a sub-investigator for several national clinical trials investigating new therapies for retinal disease. Dr. Belin has published numerous journal articles, book chapters and surgical videos, and has presented at national and international conferences. He is an active member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. He also enjoys teaching fellows and residents at the Hennepin County Medical Center and Minneapolis VA.
Dr. Belin lives in Stillwater MN with his amazing wife, two dogs and three chickens. His hobbies include biking, camping, cooking and traveling.
