Biography
Mr Antonakis is a highly regarded consultant ophthalmologist and vitreoretinal surgeon, who currently treats patients in southwest England. With over decade of experience in both the UK and Greece, he has built a reputation as a trusted specialist in vitreoretinal and cataract surgery.
After qualifying in his native Greece and being awarded a Master's Degree in Healthcare Management he moved to the UK to develop further his skills and experience in the vitreoretinal subspecialty field.
He was honoured to be a member of one of the world’s leading eye hospitals Moorfields Eye Hospital (City Road) as a Medical Retina Clinical Research Fellow and of the Institute of Ophthalmology of UCL as Senior Research Associate in Visual Neuroscience Lab and was being awarded an honorary position in recognition of his fine work.
He then worked at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust in Kent as a retinal fellow for two years, until his dedicated work was once again acknowledged, this time with the offer of a senior position.
Mr Antonakis completed his fellowships training and had the privilege to work as senior Vitreoretinal Fellow in London's best-known teaching hospital, St Thomas' Hospital, under the guidance of world-leading Vitreoretinal consultants such as Mr. Laidlaw and Prof. Williamson, expanding his horizons as a VR surgeon in the surgical, clinical and research field.
In 2018 he accepted the substantive Consultant position at University Hospital Southampton which he holds to this day. Along with his duties as Vitreoretinal Consultant in University Hospital of Southampton NHS Trust he is also as a certified clinical and educational supervisor of Wessex Deanery and Royal College of Ophthalmology for VR fellows, Trainees in Ophthalmology and CESR trainees. He is also an active member of the University of Southampton as supervisor of Research Projects for Medical Students and a regular lecturer for their Ophthalmology teaching.
Mr Antonakis is a member of the UK Vitreoretinal Surgeons Society (BEAVRS), the European Society of Retina Specialists (EURETINA) and he preserves his links with the Greek Medical Community as full member of Athens Medical Association (ISA) and with continuous collaboration with the Greek Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons (GVRS) and the University of Athens- Attikon Hospital.
