Biography

Dr. Mauricio B. Pereira, M.D., Ph.D., is a vitreoretinal surgery sub-subspecialist with over 25 years of experience. He has received numerous awards for excellence in ophthalmology and is active in clinical research, publishing extensively in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and abstracts. Dr. Pereira is a full member of several Ophthalmology Associations and regularly teaches at national and international conferences. He reviews for peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Pereira earned his medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in 1994. He completed his ophthalmology training at Federal Servidores do Estado Hospital, certified by the Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology in 2000. He completed a two-year vitreoretinal fellowship at the Federal University of Sao Paulo (UNIFESP) and earned a Ph.D. with distinction on "Indocyanine green video angiography in blunt traumatic chorioretinopathy."

He served as Assistant and later Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the Federal Fluminense University (UFF) in Rio de Janeiro, contributing to the department's high ranking in Brazil and Latin America. In 2023, he joined the Medical College of Georgia, Augusta University, for a second vitreoretinal fellowship. Dr. Pereira has trained hundreds of ophthalmologists and significantly contributed to eye disease treatment and blindness prevention in Brazil.
Dr. Pereira is now practicing in Charleston, SC, and his main interests include retina, vitreous, complications of cataract surgery, and surgical treatment of macular disorders.
