Biography
Zack Oakey, MD attended Brigham Young University for his undergraduate studies, majoring in neuroscience, minoring in Russian literature. While there he developed a relationship with the National Institute of Health (NIH)-National Institute of Neurologic Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and became a fellow of the Intramural Research Training (IRTA) program. He earned his medical degree at the University of Utah as a member of the WWAMI and TRUST programs available to students who achieve academic excellence. Following graduation, he completed ophthalmology residency at UC Irvine where he served as chief resident. During his internship, he earned the House Officer award. He represented the State of California in the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Mid-Year Forum in Washington DC. He was then awarded a vitreo-retinal fellowship at the University of Wisconsin where some of the most important and fundamental clinical research has been conducted understanding such diseases as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and retinal vein occlusion. Upon completion of this two-year fellowship program and gaining experience in practice, he underwent fellowship training in ophthalmic oncology at the Cole Eye Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. Under the guidance of Dr. Arun Singh he learned how to care for ocular melanoma, lymphoma, retinoblastoma, ocular surface cancers, learning how to meet the highest medical standards in this important aspect of medical care that only the Cleveland Clinic can provide. Here, Dr. Oakey trains residents and retina fellows in surgical and medical retinal diseases at UC Irvine as a volunteer faculty member. He has participated in multiple research studies, including personal projects and national clinical trials.
Dr. Oakey speaks, performs clinical trials and publishes in the medical literature in ophthalmic oncology. He is skilled in the management of diabetic macular edema, macular degeneration, inherited retinal disorders, retinal vein occlusion, all eye cancers and non-malignant eye tumors such as Von Hippel-Lindau syndrome-related hemangioblastomas of the retina. He also has broad expertise in the management of other medical retinal conditions and vitreo-retinal surgery (retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole).
Dr. Oakey was a ski and snowboard instructor, two children and a golden doodle, and speaks Spanish, Armenian and English fluently. He is proud to be a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Retina Specialists, International Society of Ocular Oncology, and Foundation Fighting Blindness.
