Biography
Dr. Gao was born in Qingdao, China. His medical education was at Shanghai First Medical College, Shanghai, one of the top three medical schools in China. He completed his first ophthalmology residency training in Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing, China. Then he went to Baylor College of Medicine in Houston for his PhD training in neuroscience, his study focused on growth factors in retina. He then went to University of Southern California in Los Angeles to continue his research on retinal growth factors as a post-doctoral fellow. Following that, he decided to return to clinical ophthalmology. He first did his surgical internship at University of California at San Francisco, then his second ophthalmology residency training at Indiana University, Indianapolis. Following that, he did a two-year fellowship in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston. After the training, he joined Department of Ophthalmology Indiana University Medical School as a faculty, and later was appointed as director of vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery, and was promoted as associate professor of ophthalmology. He then joined the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit as a senior staff of vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery. He is also an adjunct associate professor at Department of Ophthalmology, Wayne State Medical School, Detroit.
Dr. Gao is a fellow of American Academy of Ophthalmology, a member of American Society of Retinal Specialists, Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Medical Association, Asian Pacific Association of Ophthalmology, Michigan Ophthalmology Society, and Michigan Medical Society.
Dr. Gao is a reviewer of several ophthalmology journals including JAMA Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Eye, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, Survey of Ophthalmology, Experimental Eye Research, Journal of Ophthalmology, etc
Dr. Gao has published 44 peer reviewed articles, and some book chapters, and 75 conference abstracts,
He has been Principle Investigator, co-PI and investigator for many clinical trials for treatments of retinal diseases. He has also given many lectures and presentations around world.
