Biography

Dr. Mrinali Gupta is a Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Partner at Retina Associates of Orange County (Newport Beach, Laguna Hills, and Santa Ana, Cali). Previously, Dr. Gupta served as Vitreoretinal Surgeon and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell Medical College (New York City).

Dr. Gupta currently serves on the Board of Trustees of the Vit-Buckle Society. She serves on the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) Board of Trustees as Representative to the Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Council and formerly served on the ASRS Board of Trustees as Co-Chair of the Early Career Section (2021-2023). She was previously Vice Chair of Education for the Vit-Buckle Society and developed the Vit-Buckle Academy online curriculum. She serves as a Co-Director for a national surgical training course for retina fellows. While on faculty at Cornell, Dr. Gupta was Director of the Medical Retina Fellowship Program and was selected by the residents as “Faculty Teacher of the Year.”

Dr. Gupta has lectured at retina conferences and courses across the world and has published extensively in the field, having authored ~100 peer-reviewed publications, reviews, and textbook chapters.

Dr. Gupta received her undergrad education at Duke University, where she graduated summa cum laude with distinction, and was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Academic Honor Society. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree at Duke University, where she was the recipient of the E. Arthur Palumbo Scholarship and of the Thomas Jefferson Award for excellence in academics, service, and research (one recipient per graduating class). She was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Academic Honor Society. While in medical school, Dr. Gupta was an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Research Scholar, through which she spent one year conducting macular degeneration research at the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Gupta completed internship training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She completed ophthalmology residency training at Harvard Medical School / Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary, followed by a 2-year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Diseases & Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. During her fellowship, Dr. Gupta was a recipient of the Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship and of the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation Award given to five outstanding retina fellows nationwide.
